Patrick Kenney has developed and instructed Activity-Based Intelligence courses for over seven years. He is our go-to guy whenever training or professional development are involved. Pat closed out our week at GEOINT with a training course titled, “Advancing Geospatial Tradecraft in a Digital Proving Ground: Creating Scenario-Based Training within Simulated GEOINT Data Sets.” This title is a long and fancy way of saying that Pat taught attendees the best way to create an effective training scenario within any simulated data set.

This is the exact same process that we use to design all of our ABI courses in The Academy. Pat describes the scenario exercises in our Worldline simulated data as “the analyst’s version of a pilot’s flight simulator or a tactical commander’s table top wargame. They’re a detailed, realistic, and hopefully enjoyable way to practice and improve your skills without the costs and pressures of learning on the job.”
Scenario-based training within simulated GEOINT data sets, like those discussed in Pat’s class, are a great way for analysts to learn GEOINT by doing GEOINT. Gaining hands-on experience helps analysts master the complex tools and skills needed in their jobs, that would otherwise take months to learn. Our week was action packed: from our own panels, presentations, and training courses, to listening and learning from renowned experts, to connecting with friends both old and new. We are so grateful to USGIF for putting on such a wonderful and safe event. We loved connecting with so many professionals in the geospatial field, and cannot wait to do it again next year.
